How To Control Your Depression

Are you sad, morose, gloomy and unhappy all the time? Do you feel lonely, unsociable and pessimistic even when you are surrounded by others who are having a good time? If you are suffering from prolonged melancholy  and sudden changes in mood for quite some time, there is definitely something wrong with you.

Stress, anxiety and depression are the plagues  of the modern age and if you’re suffering from them, then I know how you feel.  Depression or  prolonged sadness is quite common in advanced countries like the United States and over 20 million Americans actually suffer from this illness. Now even developing countries are also getting affected by this menace.

Depression often gets in the way of an individual’s daily activities and his or her normal functions. One’s zest for life quickly dissipates due to depression. And in place of an individual with a sunny disposition there is a person who hates his or her own self, does not have any self-confidence, tries to isolate one’s self from the world and just does not want to live any more. Suicidal tendencies are very common in those suffering from depression. Furthermore, a person suffering from depression is not the only one who is going to suffer from this destructive illness; his or her loved ones are bound to get adversely affected and are likely to suffer from this malady themselves in the long run.

Some of the common types of depression that one hears about are:

Anxiety depression :The most common is anxiety depression, which is characterized by a state of being overly anxious about things. Anxiety is normal behavior that   helps a person adjust more to a certain stressful activity and helps you to get psyched up towards facing certain "difficult situations". However, anxiety depression  is exactly the opposite, and should not to be dismissed  merely as a "case of the nerves"; Anxiety depression is in reality an illness and is often found to be hereditary.

Manic or Bipolar depression – It is characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one's mood wherein one minute the person is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute he/she is feeling to be in a personal hell.

Postpartum depression – It is characterized by a prolonged sadness and a feeling of emptiness by a new mother wherein physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born baby can be factors why some new mother go through this.

Dysthimia – It is a chronic mood disorder and has a slight similarity with depression, although a lot less severe, but, in any case, should be immediately treated .

Cyclothemia – It is characterized by a similarity although in a milder form with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the individual suffering from this mental illness may occasionally suffer from severe changes in one's moods.

Seasonal Affecting Disorder –It is characterized by falling in a rut only during a specific season. More people actually suffer during the Winter and Fall seasons.

People tend not to "see" depression even if it is right before their eyes. But one should never overlook the various symptoms that depressed individuals exhibit, e.g., uncharacteristic behavior such as sudden loss of interest in one’s hobbies, too much or too little sleep, suddenly becoming unsociable, talking a lot about being a worthless person or thinking about suicide. In case of these symptoms, immediate treatment is absolutely essential. Depression should not be something that people fear and try to sweep under the carpet; instead, people should just take the bull by its horn, start taking charge of their lives and actually face this illness head on and fight it. Life is too beautiful a gift to be wasted away and if someone spends the majority of his or her life just being sullen, sulky and bad-tempered about every single little thing then what kind of life would that be? Depression may not kill one’s body but it will certainly kill one’s spirit unless you  intervene vigorously and take corrective steps. Don’t be a  silent victim.
